Lampard quoted at 5/4 to leave the Bridge

the sense of 'out with the old, in with the new' is an ever growing one at The Bridge

Andre Villas-Boas put his neck on the line on Tuesday evening when dropping the out-of-form Frank Lampard to the bench for Chelsea’s crucial Champions League tie against Valencia.

Although Villas-Boas has since moved to make it clear that Lampard still has a future at the club, many see it as the beginning of the end for the club legend and a signal that the manager is willing to make wholesale changes at Stamford Bridge.

It turned out to be a correct, but extremely courageous, decision. Chelsea cruised to a 3-0 victory and sealed top spot in the group as another of the old guard, Didier Drogba, rolled back the years scoring twice amid one of his best performances for a long time.

A run of five defeats in nine games had heaped pressure on Chelsea’s young manager and had many questioning his long-term future at the club. Back-to-back 3-0 victories have eased that pressure somewhat but the sense of ‘out with the old, in with the new’ is an ever growing one at The Bridge.

Nicolas Anelka and Alex have already handed in transfer requests while rumours of Drogba departing either in January or the summer continue to gather pace. And two club stalwarts of the past decade are not impenetrable to the Portuguese’s axe should he opt to wield it; John Terry has looked increasingly cumbersome in recent months while Lampard’s omission for such a big game shows that they can manage without him.

William Hill currently have a betting market relating to the club’s senior players and whether they will still be at the club on the first day of next season. Terry is 1/3 still to be a Blue next season and 9/4 to have moved to pastures new, Lampard is 4/7 to remain in West London and just 5/4 to have found a new club while Drogba is odds-on, 4/11, to go and as big as 2/1 to spend another season at Stamford Bridge.
