Liverpool 1/5 to sign Defoe

The England striker is unhappy at his lack of first team opportunities at Spurs.

Liverpool have been backed into 1/5 favourites to sign Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe this January following a string of bets with bookmaker Sky Bet.

“Unusual money for Defoe to Liverpool can't see it myself...if it happened Harry would definitely need another forward in,” said Sky Bet’s Dale Tempest on Twitter.

And Tempest seemed to have his finger on the pulse as just over ten minutes later he confirmed that the Louis Saha transfer betting market had been suspended following a rumoured move to White Hart Lane for the French striker.

“Saha market suspended so looks like its done deal. 1/5 Defoe LFC don't quite see the logic from Tottenham perspective, must be another one happening,” added Sky Bet’s PR man.

The England striker is believed to be unhappy at his lack of first team opportunities at Spurs. Defoe had reiterated his commitment to the club earlier this month, but the arrival of Saha could push him further down the pecking order and force him to rethink his options with one eye on being included in England’s Euro 2012 squad.

“At the end of the day it's not a case of me saying I want to go here, I'm not playing, I want to leave the club,” Defoe told Sky Sports News a fortnight ago.

“It's just a case of me playing. I could understand if I was 19, 20 and I had time on my hands but I'm 29 now and, like I've always said, all I want to do is play football. It's as simple as that”
