Liverpool shaken by Lucas injury

Lucas has been molded into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League

Liverpool midfielder Lucas has been ruled out for the season as a result of the knee injury picked up in the Carling Cup quarter-final victory over Chelsea.

A statement on the club’s official site read: “A scan has confirmed an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in Lucas Leiva's left knee.

“The Brazil international will undergo surgery and unfortunately be ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign.”

It is a huge blow to Liverpool and the Brazilian who had been an integral part of Liverpool’s success this season. Since Kenny Dalglish reassumed his position as manager Lucas has been molded into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.

Having been lamented for his performances when first moving to the club in 2007 he has since turned his career around and was voted the club’s player of the season in 2010/11.

The Reds were last night drawn against Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Carling Cup and are made the 13/10 outsiders to qualify for the final by bookmaker Bet365. The same firm offer a marginally bigger 13/8 that Liverpool lift the trophy in February.

The injury news will also effect Liverpool’s aspirations of a top-four finish; a goal that they are currently priced at odds of 13/8 to achieve.
