Macheda Ready for New Season

Macheda will have to compete with Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez for a place in the side

Manchester United striker Federico Macheda says he is looking for an extended run in the side this season.

The Italian played the majority of last season on loan in Italy after failing to break through in the United first team. He has made a handful of appearances and is most famous for his winning goal against Aston Villa in the Premier League two seasons ago.

“I am very happy because I had a difficult six months. I couldn't wait to get back here from Italy, even though it is my own country,” said Macheda.

“When you leave Manchester United go somewhere else and come back, you realise how different it all is. It is better to work really hard and I hope to stay here.”

Macheda will have to compete with Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Javier Hernandez for a place in the side this season.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson has already shown a tendency to pick the Italian striker more frequently than he may expect. There could come a point in the season when he is thrown in at the deep end to help save the side.

Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney are joint favourites at 9/1 to be the top scorers in the Premier League for the 2011-2012 season.
