Man City v Arsenal: Back Citizens to arrest minor slump

City are more than capable of taking full advantage of Arsenal's defensive frailties

The concluding game of this weekend’s Premier League see’s Manchester City host an in-form Arsenal side at the Etihad Stadium. Roberto Mancini will be looking for his players to respond to the recent defeat to Chelsea in the best possible way, by claiming all three points against a rejuvenated Arsenal side.

Arsenal were on the receiving end of a 1-0 defeat when the two sides met in the Carling cup last month, however, neither side fielded their strongest XI that night, so I wouldn’t take that match into consideration when trying to decipher a winner from this fixture.

Despite being in a rich vein of form – unbeaten in last eight league games – Arsenal fans don’t need reminding that the last time they travelled to Manchester, they were truly silenced as a rampant United side dismantled them 8-2.

Arsene Wenger will hoping Robin Van Persie continues his goal-scoring form this weekend. The Dutchman has been almost unplayable at times this season and The Gunners are capable of beating any team when he is in the mood. Van Persie has been involved in almost 70% of Arsenal goals this calendar year. It will take a brave man to bet against him scoring this weekend and Stan James are offering a very generous 2/1 on him scoring anytime. Wenger’s main concern this weekend has to be his lack of fit fullbacks. Andre Santos has recently joined fellow defenders Bakary Sagna, Carl Jenkinson and Keiron Gibbs on the treatment table as things go from bad to worse for an already vulnerable defence.

Hosts Manchester City are more than capable of taking full advantage of Arsenal’s defensive frailties. With so many world-class forwards in his squad, Roberto Mancini will feel confident of out-scoring the opposition, regardless who he opts to play up top. One man who should make the starting line-up though, is Mario Balotelli. Just like Van Persie at Arsenal, Super Mario has been almost unplayable in recent weeks and is calmness personified when receiving the ball in the opposition’s penalty area. The Italian can be backed at 6/4 with Sky Bet to get himself on the score sheet and the same firm offer 11/2 on him bagging the first.

One thing this game should have is goals. Both teams have strikers in phenomenal form mixed with defences more than capable of conceding goals. Boylesports are offering 13/8 for more than 3.5 goals and this could easily be reached with both teams favouring an attack-minded approach.

Depending on earlier results, City may find themselves dropping to 2nd in the league before kick-off. However, I believe they have more enough fire-power to see off an injury-plagued Arsenal, which will see them sitting pretty at the top of the table come Sunday evening.

Recommended Bets:

Manchester City to win @ 3/4 with Victor Chandler

Robin Van Persie to score anytime @ 2/1 with Stan James
