Man City v Liverpool betting preview

The away team go to Eastlands with the strongest defence in the league

The Etihad stadium is the stage for one of the biggest games of the season so far in the Barclays Premier League as Manchester City and Liverpool lock horns to recommence battle following their initial meeting in late November. In that game, Liverpool were very unlucky not to be the first team to beat City as Joe Hart had a stand-out game for The Citizens.

Kenny Dalglish’s team come into the game with a storm cloud hanging over their heads, after their star player Luis Suarez was handed an eight-game suspension following racism allegations by Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Their choice not to appeal against the decision means that the Uruguayan will not be involved here.

With Friday’s cup game against League One Oldham hot on their heels, Dalglish’s team is in the middle of a tight fixture pile-up and this could be a game too far, as they may be chasing the ball for large periods of the game.

As for Manchester City, by their standards, they are in a drought having not won in three games. The key to this slight downturn is their failure to find the net, and they face a Liverpool side that is disciplined at the back and will make it very tough for the home side to break them down yet again. The away team go to Eastlands with the strongest defence in the league, having conceded a mere 15 goals and kept seven clean sheets.

Roberto Mancini will be keen to get his team back on track, but I don’t think they will be able to tonight against a stubborn Liverpool outfit that will go to Eastlands to frustrate and hope for a goal on the counter-attack. With a tight match predicted, goals should be at a premium and the 5/6 from Stan James for less than 2.5 goals looks good value. Coral are offering 5/4 that only one team scores; this could be the case if a team decides to ‘shut up shop’ after opening the scoring. As well, Blue Square are giving the best odds for a goalless draw, as they offer a 0-0 scoreline at 10/1. This should not be ignored, as it could take a while for the game to get into gear.
