Man City v Wigan Betting Preview

Having taken some time to settle, Mario Balotelli is beginning to show the class that justifies Mancini's forgiving attitude towards the young strikers misgivings - of which he has many.

Manchester City's title aspirations were reignited by Chelsea's defeat of Manchester United in midweek but the same result made their top four ambitions a little more precarious. A home game against bottom-of-the-table Wigan is a must-win for the Citizens.

City manager Roberto Mancini is without the services of Kolo Toure who is suspended indefinitely after testing positive for a specified substance. Vincent Kompany should slot straight into the side to replace the Ivorian after returning from injury.

Wigan are without defender Emmerson Boyce but can call on midfielder Tom Cleverley after the on-loan Manchester United youngster was ineligible to play against his parent club last time out.

City are high on numbers

Although they can close the gap on leaders Manchester United to seven points with a win here, all realistic ambitions are focussed on bringing Champions League football to Eastlands next season.

At a time when others are notably struggling with the perils of expanding injury lists and accumulated suspensions City are beginning to flex the muscles of their strong squad. Mancini was able to move top scorer Carlos Tevez and £27m signing Edin Dzeko to the bench for the 3-0 win over Aston Villa in midweek and is likely to rotate his starting XI again with a trip to Kiev coming up in midweek.

Wigan, on the other hand, do not have such luxuries. They rely heavily on the talents of Hugo Rodallega and Charles N'Zogbia but without a strong supporting cast the Latics have invariably fallen short of what is required in the Premier League, specifically in the second half of this season.

Roberto Martinez's side have won just once since Boxing Day and now prop up the Premier League table. Recent performances have given no indication of that improving and betting odds of 8/1 are an accurate reflection of Wigan's slim chances this weekend. City are 4/11 to enhance their top-four credentials with a win and it is 4/1 that the game ends level.

Super Mario begins to show his class

Having taken some time to settle, Mario Balotelli is beginning to show the class that justifies Mancini's forgiving attitude towards the young strikers misgivings - of which he has many. His goal against Aston Villa in midweek was a finish of sublime quality taking his season tally to ten and was the second time that he had found the net in as many games.

Mancini appears to know how best to handle his fellow countryman and one suspects that he will keep in him in the starting line-up and allow his rich vein of form to continue. If he does then odds of 6/5 on him finding the net at any time in the game are worth having on side.

One player certain to feature is the influential David Silva. The Spanish midfielder's creativity was sorely missed in the 1-1 draw with Fulham last weekend and his return for the midweek win over Villa highlighted just how important he is to the City cause. Odds of 9/4 can be found on Silva scoring against Wigan this weekend.

Mancini has voiced his concerns about the number of fixtures that his players are required to play at this stage of the season. But, ironically, they look the best equipped of all their peers to cope with such strains.
