Man Utd V Benfica: Home side to edge tight game

The result is far more important than the performance

Manchester United welcome Benfica to Old Trafford this Tuesday night hoping to secure qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Wayne Rooney is expected to play but the hosts will definitely be without Michael Owen, Tom Cleverley and captain Nemanja Vidic. Chris Smalling and Danny Welbeck are also doubtful.

The Red Devils have won five consecutive games without conceding a single goal since the humiliating 6-1 defeat by rivals Manchester City. With qualification in sight, they will be looking for another win against the Portuguese league leaders. However, Benfica have not been beaten in 20 matches this season and they were unlucky not to beat United when the two sides played out a 1-1 draw in September.

United have lost just two of their last 56 Champions League fixtures at Old Trafford and their supporters will expect them to avoid defeat again. The result is far more important than the performance in this game and neither team will want to leave themselves vulnerable against counter-attacks. Expect a tight and cagey affair to be edged by the hosts.
