Man Utd v Chelsea Betting Preview

the home win is available to back at 17/20

Last season’s top two go head to head at Old Trafford this Sunday afternoon as both teams defend unbeaten starts to the season. All the early season hype has been about the two Manchester clubs but Chelsea are going about their business quietly and remain very much in the hunt.

While United have blown away all they have come up against in their opening four Premier League games Chelsea have been a lot more pragmatic in their approach. Following an opening day draw at Stoke The Blues have done the bare minimum required to defeat West Brom, Norwich and Sunderland in subsequent games. They’ll need to change up a couple of gears to keep pace with this exciting United team.

Although Champions League scheduling means that Chelsea have had an extra day to prepare for this game fatigue shouldn’t be a factor after Sir Alex Ferguson made wholesale changes for Wednesday’s trip to Benfica.

David de Gea, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones, Anderson, Ashley Young and Javier Hernandez should all return to the United starting XI.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas’s big decision in terms of team selection will be whether to start Fernando Torres. The Spaniard drew another blank in the midweek game against Bayer Leverkusen but did look sharp and set up both of his team’s goals.

Blues fans will be hoping that he can rediscover the form that saw him run rings around Nemanja Vidic when Liverpool beat United 4-1 at Old Trafford in 2008. Torres is priced at odds of 7/2, with William Hill, to find the back of the net this weekend.

Victor Chandler price the home win at industry-high betting odds of 17/20. Consider that Ferguson’s men were priced at 5/4 when the teams met at the end of last season and you get an idea of how much bookmakers and punters are respecting the style of football United have been playing.

Goals are also expected; with odds of 10/11 available on there being more than 2.5. United have scored in each of their last 32 consecutive Premier League games at Old Trafford while Chelsea haven’t kept a clean sheet in the league since the opening day of the season.

It’s too early to brand this game as a title decider, but it will certainly go a long way to setting the early season tone. If Chelsea can halt the United juggernaut they’ll be considered genuine title challengers, if they don’t then it may be time to begin etching ‘Manchester’ onto the trophy.
