Martinez backed in manager sack race

Wigan are now five points adrift of safety

Roberto Martinez has been backed into as short as 5/2 in the betting on the next Premier League manager to lose his job following a ninth straight defeat.

The Latics slumped to a 3-1 defeat to Wolves at Molineux on Sunday and are now five points adrift of safety and marooned to the bottom of the Premier League table.

While the bookmakers have shortened their odds on Martinez becoming the first managerial casualty of the Premier League season the Spaniard remains defiant.

“There wasn't much in the game, but once again I feel we're getting punished by not controlling key moments in games,” said the Wigan boss.

“It's never ideal to have an international break straight after a negative result, but this is one of those things you cannot change so we'll use the break to our advantage, work hard on the training pitch and make sure when the players return from representing their country they're all ready to face Blackburn with confidence and look like a team who have deserved results in the last eight games.

“We need to treat the next game as a cup final; we're playing at home and must understand that everyone's voice and energy will help towards getting the result we need.”

Wigan are quoted at odds of 6/4 to pick up all three points in that relegation battle in two weeks time. A win for Blackburn is quoted at 9/5 while a share of the spoils, which would suit neither team nor manager, is 11/5.
