Martinez favourite for Villa Park role

The Villans finished the campaign just two points above the relegation zone

Roberto Martinez has been made Stan James’ 6/4 favourite to become the next manager of Aston Villa following rumours that Alex McLeish will leave the club after a dismal season at Villa Park.

The Villans finished the campaign just two points above the relegation zone and with only four home league wins all season. Leaving Villa fans calling for the former Birmingham boss’s head and chairman Randy Lerner flying in from America to hold crisis talks.

“I am not a quitter,” said McLeish after the final-day 2-0 defeat to Norwich.

“I can totally understand the fans' frustrations and I am the man who carries the can for the performances, but it is also frustrating for me to watch that kind of stuff.

“It is up to me to turn the opinion around and will do my best.”

The Aston Villa fans were heard chanting opposition manager Paul Lambert’s name at Carrow Road on Sunday and it is the Norwich boss who bookmakers have down as the second favourite to replace McLeish at odds of 11/4.

Other names in the reckoning include current Celtic boss Neil Lennon at 10/1, former Charlton and West Ham manager Alan Curbishley at odds of 12/1 and current Molde manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
