McClaren Slashed For Baggies Hotseat

after winning just five out of 21 league games, and falling out with star-player Diego, he was sacked on Monday.

Odds on Steve McClaren becoming the next permanent West Bromwich Albion manager have been slashed after he was sacked from his position as Wolfsburg manager.

The former England manager decided to move abroad to try and rebuild his reputation following his disastrous tenure as the national team coach. And he did so commendably in Holland by leading FC Twente to the first league title in their history before claiming the Rinus Michels Award for Dutch manager of the season.

That was to be his last act as manager of FC Twente as he took over as manager of Bundesliga side Wolfsburg that following summer, becoming the first Englishman to manage in Germany's top flight. But, after winning just five out of 21 league games, and falling out with star-player Diego, he was sacked on Monday.

The bookmakers reacted to the news by slashing his odds on becoming the next West Brom manager from 40/1 to as short as 8/1 in some places.

McClaren is also quoted at 6/4 to find his next job in the Premier League and the same price that his next contract will be with a Championship club. It's 6/1 that he returns to the Dutch Eredivisie, 10/1 that he stays in the Bundesliga and 14/1 that he takes a job in the SPL.

Chris Hughton remains the strong favourite in the next Baggies manager betting at odds of around the 7/4 mark, Martin Jol is second favourite at 5/1 and current caretaker manager Michael Appleton is a similar price.

Sam Allardcye yesterday distanced himself from the job and as a result is now as big as 16/1.

Roy Hodgson remains a lively candidate if chairman Jeremy Peace can convince the 63-year-old of their ambitions beyond surviving in the Premier League this season.

The former Liverpool and Fulham manager has managed numerous foreign clubs and is therefore used to working in the continental system that West Brom currently favour. His experience of working alongside a Director of Football combined with his knowledge of the Premier League, plus the fact that he is currently unemployed and thus wouldn't need a payoff, make him an ideal candidate at odds of 5/1.
