Mourinho 7/2 second-favourite to replace AVB

Di Matteo has been appointed first team coach on an interim basis

Jose Mourinho is made the 7/2 second-favourite to replace Andre Villas-Boas as manager of Chelsea by bookmaker Ladbrokes. With former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez made the 5/2 favourite.

An announcement on the club’s official website on Sunday afternoon confirmed that Villas-Boas and Chelsea Football Club had parted company, with Roberto di Matteo taking over on an interim basis until the end of the season.

“Andre Villas-Boas has parted company with Chelsea Football Club today,” said a statement on the club’s site.

“Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season.

“With immediate effect Roberto Di Matteo has been appointed first team coach on an interim basis until the end of the season.”

Di Matteo is made a 5/1 chance to land the job on a permanent basis at the end of the season, with current Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola quoted at odds of 4/1. Former England boss Fabio Capello is the only other man available at single-figure odds and can be backed at odds of 7/1.

Di Matteo’s first game in charge will be this Tuesday’s FA Cup fifth round replay against Birmingham, where the Premier League side are quoted at odds of 2/5 to progress to the quarter-finals.
