Newcastle v Everton: Draw suits both teams

Newcastle have fired first-half blanks in nine of their thirteen games this season

Newcastle host Everton in the lunch-time kick-off at St James’ Park on Saturday, hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.

The Magpies currently boast the best defensive record in the league and, in Demba Ba, they have an in-form striker who has netted eight times in his last six games. If Alan Pardew’s men can break down Everton’s defence, don’t be surprised to see Ba doing the damage once again.

Cheik Tiote may return from injury to bolster Newcastle’s midfield while Everton hope Sylvain Distin will be fit to line up alongside Phil Jagielka in defence. Royston Drenthe returns from suspension and is likely to start for the away side.

Supporters of both Newcastle and Everton have been starved of goals in games involving their respective teams - only fans of Stoke and West Brom have seen fewer.

Newcastle have fired first-half blanks in nine of their thirteen games this season with 17 of their 24 goals having been scored in the second half. Similarly, Everton have managed only three first-half goals in their opening nine league games and therefore the statistics point towards a slow start at St James’ Park. A goalless first half is priced at 15/8 with Coral.

The Toffees have avoided defeat just once in their last six games in all competitions.  However, five of those were against Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea (twice) and Manchester United.  David Moyes will no doubt see the trip to St James’ Park as an opportunity to kick-start their season ahead of the international break.

Avoiding relegation will remain Newcastle’s priority until they reach the 40-point mark while Everton will be happy to avoid a third successive defeat. A draw would appear to suit both teams. A correct score prediction of 0-0 attracts odds of 10/1 with Stan James but the same price is quoted for No Goalscorer in the First Goalscorer market. Backing No Goalscorer ensures a full pay-out if the only goals scored are own goals.
