Newcastle v Man Utd betting preview

United remain unbeaten away from home in the division

Newcastle play host to Manchester United this Wednesday and the home side will be looking to halt a slump of just one win in their last six games against a team they haven't beaten since 2001. The Red Devils, however, will be desperate to bounce back from a shock loss to Blackburn and get back to winning ways.

Alan Pardew is confident that Gabriel Obertan will not miss out on another reunion with his former teammates and Demba Ba and Chieck Tiote are available despite their impending African Cup of Nations commitments. Steven Taylor, Danny Guthrie and Sylvain Marveaux are all absent. Davide Santon will be vying for a full-back berth with either Ryan Taylor or Danny Simpson, though the latter's mistake against Liverpool could see him rested having been the only outfielder to play all 19 of Newcastle's games this season.

The Reds still have a whole raft of injury problems to contend with. Nemanja Vidic, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Michael Owen and Jonny Evans are amongst those sidelined. Chris Smalling has an outside chance of a return but Sir Alex Ferguson hopes Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand will both feature.

Wayne Rooney was left out of the defeat to Blackburn after being fined for his performance during training having been out with his wife on the night of Boxing Day. He is likely to return to the starting line-up with the side struggling somewhat in his absence.

United's shock home defeat to struggling Blackburn on New Year's Eve ended a run of five consecutive Barclays Premier League wins in December. The goal will be to begin 2012 positively and bounce back from only a second loss in their league campaign. United remain unbeaten away from home in the division, the only side to manage this feat with every other club losing at least twice on the road. Newcastle have won only once in their last eight outings after a splendid start to the season. A 2-0 Boxing Day win at Bolton was their first victory since 5 November.

Two players to look out for on the score-sheet are Demba Ba, who has scored 21 goals in just 26 Premier League starts in 2011, and Wayne Rooney, who has scored six goals in his last six away matches against the Magpies.

Newcastle may fancy their chances against the reigning champions who are suffering with their injury woes and after a sub-standard performance at home to Blackburn team morale could be low.

However, United are very well known for their ability to bounce back from such disappointments and having rested players in recent matches, Ferguson may revert to a more traditional line-up after playing a number of players out of position last time out.

In the last 13 Premier League matches between the two sides at St. James' Park, Newcastle have only won twice, though they have been more of a match in their last two meetings where they drew 0-0 and 1-1.

I think Manchester United will come out on top in this match as they will be full of determination to get back to winning ways, however, don't be surprised to see both sides scoring as the Magpies have already proven that they are a side capable of producing goals and they will be looking to take advantage of Ferguson's defensive problems.
