Newcastle v Wigan: Unbeaten run to be protected

The Geordies' success has been built upon a solid defensive unit

Newcastle maintained their unbeaten start to the season when a late Shola Ameobi strike earned them a 2-2 draw and a share of the spoils last Sunday. It’s a run that they can extend further when Wigan come to St James’ Park this Saturday afternoon.

Alan Pardew has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the game with Sammy Ameobi, Danny Guthrie, Alan Smith and Michael Williamson amongst the absentees.

Wigan’s only injury concern is midfielder Ben Watson who was forced off at half-time in last weekend’s defeat to Bolton.

The Geordies’ success has been built upon a solid defensive unit that has seen them concede only six goals this season – no team have conceded fewer in the Premier League. That doesn’t bode well for a Wigan side that have one of the worst offensive records in the division. The Latics have scored just six league goals and only once on their travels this season.

At betting odds of 8/13 there is little value in backing the home side. Although I do expect that they will win with the ease that those odds suggest.

Instead take some of the Evens that Bet365 are offering on there being fewer than 2.5 goals in the game. Roberto Martinez’s side are severely lacking in firepower and despite The Magpies’ unbeaten record they are far from prolific in front of goal themselves.
