Parker odds-on for Euros armband

Parker was previously quoted at odds of 9/4

Scott Parker is now the 1/2 favourite to lead England out in their opening Euro 2012 game against France as bookmaker Coral are forced to slash the Tottenham midfielder’s odds in light of him being handed the armband by Stuart Pearce for Wednesday night’s friendly against Holland.

Pearce opted for the 31-year-old, who joined Spurs from West Ham in the summer, ahead of previous captain Steven Gerrard and other lesser-fancied players Joe Hart and James Milner.

“Although there is no guarantee that Stuart Pearce will be picking the captain for the Euro 2012 opener, his decision to go with Scott Parker for this friendly must be a huge vote of confidence in the Tottenham player, especially as his club boss, Harry Redknapp, is hot favourite to be in charge of the national side in the summer,” said Coral’s David Stevens.

Parker was previously quoted at odds of 9/4 to captain the Three Lions against France with Gerrard made favourite. The Liverpool captain is now a 5/2 chance, followed by Joe Hart at odds of 8/1, Frank Lampard at 20/1 and Rio Ferdinand at 25/1.

Coral make Holland their slight 13/8 favourites for victory at Wembley on Wednesday as Pearce looks to field a youthful and largely inexperienced side. England are a 7/4 chance with the draw also proving popular at 7/4.
