Premier League Weekend Preview

if United take all three points it would be game over for City's title aspirations this season

No doubting which is the big Premier League game of this weekend as the Manchester derby pits the league leaders against the pretenders to the throne.

In the grand scheme of things Manchester United's defeat to Wolves last weekend wasn't as bad as it could have been with Arsenal and Chelsea both dropping points. However, Manchester City did capitalise on United's slip up and a win at Old Trafford would move them to within two points of Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

On the other hand, if United take all three points it would be game over for City's title aspirations this season with the gap extending to eight points and The Citizens having played a game fewer.

The Red Devils have been impenetrable at Old Trafford this season, dropping just two points in 13 games and leading at half-time and full-time in their last nine. The bookmakers go 4/5 about another home win, 11/4 on the draw and 4/1 for City to make it back-to-back defeats for United.

Arsene Wenger will likely be happy with any result that doesn't see the leaders taking all three points but will be more concerned with restoring his side's confidence after the debacle of St James' Park.

Four points from 12 away games would normally suggest that Wolves are welcome visitors to any Premier League ground but last weekend's shock victory means that they cannot be taken lightly here. It is 1/4 that The Gunners bounce back with a win this Saturday, 5/1 for the draw and 11/1 that Wolves make it a miraculous double over the Premier League's top two.

Chelsea will know exactly where they stand when they play on Monday this weekend. But regardless of results elsewhere the pressure will be on as Carlo Ancelotti knows that his side cannot afford any more slip-ups.

The Blues are 8/11 betting favourites to beat neighbours Fulham who are 4/1 with a share of the spoils priced at 5/2.

At the other end of the table managerless West Brom host West Ham in a crucial relegation six-pointer. The Hammers' inconsistencies have been their downfall this season, losing at home to Birmingham last time out after apparently turning the corner with victory over Blackpool in their previous game.

The Baggies, though, have lost seven of their last nine games, a run of form that saw Roberto Di Matteo clearing his desk on Monday morning of this week. Avram Grant's side are 3/1 to get the win that would take them above their opponents while West Brom are an Even money shot to get their season back on track with all three points.

It is unlikely that this weekend's Premier League action will live up to the record-breaking exploits of last weekend, but there are still many important games which could go a long way to determining the issues at the top and bottom of the table.
