Red Devils to hum a familiar Toon

Newcastle have not beaten the Red Devils at Old Trafford since 1972

Manchester United welcome Newcastle United to Old Trafford looking to close the gap at the top of the Premier League table.

The Red Devils are currently five points behind rivals Manchester City and Sir Alex Ferguson will see this fixture as an opportunity to put pressure on their neighbours who face Liverpool on Sunday. Newcastle, however, will be in no mood to surrender their place in the top four.  Last weekend’s defeat against league leaders Manchester City was the first time Newcastle had been beaten this season but, with second-placed United and fifth-placed Chelsea next on the agenda, Alan Pardew will know that three consecutive defeats would be damaging to their league position.

Sir Alex Ferguson will be without long-term absentees Anderson and Tom Cleverley but Wayne Rooney may return from injury. Meanwhile Newcastle have some good news of their own as Chieck Tiote, Leon Best and Gabriel Obertan all look set to be available for selection.

Newcastle have not beaten the Red Devils at Old Trafford since 1972 and will be hard pressed to end that run against a side that has won their last three games without conceding a goal. Manchester United have kept more clean sheets (6) than any other team in the top flight while the Magpies boast the joint-best defensive record, having conceded just eight goals in 11 games before their 3-1 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. The statistics point towards a low-scoring game but Manchester United have not failed to score in any of their 20 league and cup fixtures this season. The game has an all-too-predictable look to it and, whilst a home win is best-priced at 2/5, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men are significantly higher at 2/3 to score the first and last goal of the game.

Manchester United have conceded an average of under 0.17 goals per game with captain Nemanja Vidic in the team this season. Without him, they have conceded an average of 1.3 goals per game. With Vidic likely to start, the home side look good value at 5/4 to win to nil.
