Red Devils to prevail over Bilbao

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last seven league games

Manchester United welcome Athletic Bilbao to Old Trafford in the first-leg of their Europa League last-16 tie on Thursday night.

Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Anderson will all be hoping to feature following recent lay-offs but Paul Scholes and Antonio Valencia look set to miss out. Michael Owen, Nemanja Vidic and Anders Lindegaard are still missing for the hosts. Javier Hernandez was on the scoresheet in both legs of United’s aggregate 3-2 win over Ajax in the previous round and he will be hoping for another chance to impress. BetVictor offer a tempting 11/8 for the Mexican striker to score at any time during the game.

The Copa Del Rey finalists look set to be without Aitor Ocio, Xabier Castillo and Carlos Gurpegui while Fernando Amorebieta is suspended.

The Red Devils are unbeaten in their last seven league games but they have won only one of their four European fixtures at Old Trafford this season. Premier League success remains Sir Alex Ferguson’s priority but the Europa League represents their only hope of a cup win this season. United are currently 7/2 second-favourites to lift the trophy in May.

Fernando Llorente has scored 21 goals in 34 games this season and he is available at 11/4 with Sky Bet to net again at Old Trafford. Bilbao currently occupy fifth place in La Liga but sit a massive 30 points behind league-leaders Real Madrid. Only Madrid and Barcelona have scored more league goals than Bilbao this campaign while Manchester City are the only Premier League side to have outscored United. Goals seem a certainty and Betfred’s odds of 8/11 for over 2.5 goals in the game look excellent value.

In any case, it is hard to make an argument for anything other than a home win and several bookmakers offer odds of 8/15 for the Red Devils to take a lead heading into the second-leg in Bilbao next week.
