Redknapp hoping for new Modric deal

Chelsea are the 3/1 favourites

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is hopeful that club chairman Daniel Levy can convince Luka Modric to sign a new contract at the club.

Modric scored his first goal of the season in Spurs’ 4-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday and Redknapp is optimistic that they can now draw a line under the summer’s transfer saga.

“It was a great strike. That's why we were offered £40million for him, because he's a top player,” said the Tottenham boss.

“Luka is fine now, he's just getting on with it. I think the chairman will sit down with him and discuss his contract.

“That's what I'd like to happen. The chairman has said he would give it six or seven weeks, sit down and have a chat with him.”

Chelsea made numerous attempts to sign the midfielder throughout the summer but were continually rebuffed by a resolute Tottenham board, despite the player making his desire to leave well known. The Croatian was then left out of the Tottenham side for their opening game of the season against Manchester United as Redknapp believed his “head was not right”.

Redknapp will be keen to see the 26-year-old sign a new contract before the January transfer window opens in order to stave off any renewed approaches.

Chelsea are the 3/1 favourites in the Luka Modric transfer betting markets, followed by Manchester City at 5/1 and Manchester United at 6/1.
