Reds strong betting favourites to see off Latics

Athletic play very much in the style that their manager did as a player

One of the biggest weekends on the football calendar is upon us, as the third round of the FA Cup takes centre stage with many lower league teams fancying their chances to upset the Premier League big boys. The scene for the first game of the weekend is Merseyside as Paul Dickov takes his Oldham Athletic team to one of football’s iconic arenas, Anfield, to face a Liverpool side that some Latics fans believe are there to be taken.

Oldham are in 14th position in League One, yet are only seven points off the play-off positions and a result on Merseyside could do wonders for a young and upcoming side looking to make big strides up the table. Their play has been shrouded by inconsistency, pulling out surprising results away at league leaders Charlton, for example, yet underwhelming against out-of-form Hartlepool in their next outing.

Their main talisman comes is former Premier League striker Shefki Kuqi, and he will be the man that the away team will look to if they are to get anything from the game on Friday night. However, after hitting a real purple patch since signing in the August transfer window, he has gone missing in recent games, failing to score in his last six contests in all competitions.

As for the home side, they will be looking to put their midweek disappointment behind them, but they will not find it easy as Athletic play very much in the style that their manager did as a player; fighting for every loose ball and competing until the very end of every game. Kenny Dalglish will be coming to terms with Luis Suarez’s prolonged absence, and he will now be forced to rely on his misfiring signing Andy Carroll to finally come up with the goods. Captain Steven Gerrard will be the main man for Liverpool and he seems a good bet to open the scoring for the Merseysiders at 5/1 with Bet365, which seems rather good value.

In terms of the result, the game could be a lot tighter than what it appears to be on paper. Many cup ties are quite tight to start off with, and then develop in the second half. This could follow that very same pattern, and with the 6,000+ following the Blues are expected to bring, Oldham may hold their own with the home side until the second half when fatigue and some Premier League know-how may well be the difference between the two outfits.
