Rested Reds to earn a draw

The Carling Cup represents Dalglish's biggest hope of winning silverware

Premier League leaders Manchester City welcome Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium in the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi-Final on Wednesday night.

Manchester City’s 3-2 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday was the first time they had failed to win in 17 home games.  Roberto Mancini will therefore be keen to get back to winning ways thereby ensuring his side takes an advantage to Anfield in two weeks’ time. With just over 72 hours between their FA Cup exit and their kick-off against Liverpool, the Citizens will need a quick recovery having played nearly 80 minutes of the Manchester Derby with just 10-men.

The FA has rejected Vincent Kompany’s appeal against his sending off on Sunday and therefore he begins his four-match ban. Gareth Barry returns from suspension for the hosts but David Silva, Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko are all struggling with injuries. Yaya Toure and Kolo Toure are also unavailable having been released for international duty with the Ivory Coast.

Liverpool, in contrast, enjoyed a relatively undemanding 5-1 win over Oldham Athletic on Friday night and Kenny Dalglish was able to rest many first-teamers including his first-choice back-four, all of whom should return to face City. Steven Gerrard is again expected to start, as is Andy Carroll in the absence of the suspended Luis Suarez.

Manchester City have scored three or more goals in exactly half of their games this season and, in three of the last four fixtures between these two sides, the home side has won 3-0. 188Bet offer just 12/1 for a Manchester City 3-0 win but William Hill’s “Match Winner Offer” is far more tempting - they have boosted the price of a home win by a margin of 3 or more goals to 10/1 from 15/2. Sergio Aguero is the favourite at 11/8 to score at any time during the game and he will be confident of adding to his tally of 17 goals in all competitions this season.

The fixture scheduling may have an effect on Roberto Mancini’s team selection and therefore Liverpool should not be written off lightly. The Carling Cup represents Kenny Dalglish’s biggest hope of winning some silverware this season and his rested side will relish the opportunity to avenge the 3-0 league defeat at the hands of the Citizens last week. Victor Chandler’s odds of 5/2 for the draw are the same as 188Bet’s price for an away win – the former seems more likely under the circumstances and, with a second-leg to come, neither side would see a draw as a disaster.
