Resurgent Wigan made odds-against for drop

The Latics had lost their previous 14 encounters with Sir Alex Ferguson's side

Bookmaker Bet365 have pushed Wigan out to odds of 5/4 for relegation after they recorded their first ever win over Manchester United on Wednesday evening at the DW Stadium.

The Latics had lost their previous 14 encounters with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side and were given little hope of addressing that statistic with United priced around 4/9 to pick up the three points. But Roberto Martinez’s side took control of the game from the offset and rewarded those brave enough to back the home side at odds of 10/1.

“You can imagine the delight of everyone at the club,” said Martinez after the game. “It’s been a tough week for us since the Chelsea game, it’s been tough not to feel sorry for ourselves and focus on our performance.

“To perform in the manner that we did and to do it against United, knowing our previous record against them, speaks volumes about the strong mindset of these players.”

Shaun Maloney’s strike past David de Gea early in the second half was enough to lift Wigan out of the relegation zone for the first time since week 14 of the season. The Latics are joined on 31 points by QPR (11/8 to be relegated) with both sides now two points clear of 18th placed Bolton (11/10 for the drop) and a further point clear of Blackburn (2/5 to go down).
