Rooney to spoil Martin's Joly Christmas

Sir Alex Ferguson will rightly expect five wins in 18 days

Manchester United face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night seeking a fourth consecutive Premier League win.

Fulham will be without Mark Schwarzer, Simon Davies and Steve Sidwell while Bobby Zamora remains a doubt. United have injury concerns of their own and Sir Alex Ferguson will not be able to call on Nemanja Vidić, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Rafael or Michael Owen.

Fresh from their 2-0 win over Bolton, the Cottagers will hope to continue their good run of form against some of the best teams in the league having already taken points from Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool this season.

The Fulham game comes just three days after United’s 2-0 win over Queens Park Rangers and, with fixtures against Wigan, Blackburn and Newcastle to come over the festive period, Sir Alex Ferguson will rightly expect five wins in 18 days to mount further pressure on current league-leaders Manchester City.

The result may come down to the side that deals best with the absence of crucial players. The strength-in-depth throughout Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad makes them the 8/11 favourites to prevail. Manchester United’s last five wins over Fulham have come without conceding a goal. Given that only Liverpool have conceded fewer league goals than United this season and only six teams have scored fewer than Fulham, the statistics point towards a difficult evening for Martin Jol’s forwards. Ladbrokes offer a tempting 2/1 for the away side to win to nil.

Wayne Rooney tends to score his goals during purple patches. At the beginning of the season, he was scoring for fun and, after a Premier League goal-drought stretching nearly three months, he has netted three times in his last two games. Betfred and Coral offer 11/10 for Rooney to score at any time against Fulham – a significant improvement on Ladbrokes’ 8/13.  Rooney is also available at 4/1 to score the first goal but Victor Chandler’s ‘Double-up’ offer may be worth a look. Up to £25 can be staked at 18/5 on Rooney to score first and any winnings will be doubled if he scores two or more.
