Scholes 8/1 to make England Euro 2012 squad

8/11 that he scores a Premier League goal for Man Utd this season

Paul Scholes made a surprise return to the Manchester United squad for their FA Cup tie with Manchester City at the weekend, after Sir Alex Ferguson convinced the midfielder to come out of retirement. Now bookmaker Sky Bet make the 37-year-old an 8/1 chance to be named in Fabio Capello’s England squad for Euro 2012.

Scholes made 66 appearances for England before retiring from international football in August 2004 during Sven Goran Eriksson’s tenure. But when Capello took over as national boss he offered Scholes the opportunity to return to the fold in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup.

Following some deliberation Scholes eventually turned down the chance, before later admitting that he may have made a mistake in doing so.

“I am not saying I would have made a difference,” said the United midfielder after the 2010 World Cup.

“I am saying I might have made the wrong decision.”

Sky Bet now offer odds of 8/1 that he is included in Capello’s squad, 12/1 that he is named in the starting XI for England’s opening match at the competition and 16/1 that he scores at Euro 2012.

“He’s obviously not going to play in every game in the second half of the season but he could still prove very influential against some of the lesser sides in the run-in. It remains to be seen whether an aging midfield containing the likes of Scholes and Giggs is going to be good enough to maintain a title challenge,” said Sky Bet’s Joe Petyt.

The bookmaker also offer odds of 8/11 that he scores a Premier League goal for Manchester United this season, 5/1 that he scores three or more and 12/1 that he scores in the FA Cup final.
