Scunthorpe v Newcastle Betting Preview

Scunthorpe have not begun their League One campaign too positively

Newcastle are looking to build on their Wear-Tyne derby victory by beating Scunthorpe this evening and booking a place in the third round of the Carling Cup.

Joey Barton will not feature for the Geordies as he continues to deliberate over a move to Queens Park Rangers, goalkeeper Steve Harper is still a couple of weeks away from a return but Sylvain Marveaux could make his debut.

Oliver Norwood could make his Scunthorpe debut following his loan move from Manchester United. Paul Reid is unavailable due to injury meaning Niall Canavan is likely to partner Michael Nelson in defence.

Buoyed by the confidence of an opening-day draw against Arsenal and a derby day win against Sunderland manager Alan Pardew is considering making sweeping changes.

“We are looking forward to the cup match this week. It is a competition that we want to do well in,” said Pardew.

“There's one or two who I definitely need to rest, and there are one or two who I need to give games to because I want to keep them up to speed.”

Scunthorpe, contrastingly, have not begun their League One campaign too positively; drawing three and losing one of their opening four games. But manager Alan Knill believes that his side have the potential to cause an upset.

“There's been a lot of excitement around the place in training and I know that all the players, especially with it being on television, want to showcase what they have in their locker,” said Knill.

“You have to be optimistic of an upset and we don't know what kind of team they might put out.”

The bookmakers are offering odds of 4/6 about a win inside 90 minutes for the Premier League outfit. The draw is 11/4 and the home side are the 4/1 outsiders in the Scunthorpe v Newcastle betting odds.

If there is one statistical trend to follow then it might be that both teams have scored in nine of The Irons’ last ten games. It is odds of 8/11 for that trend to be embellished here.
