Spain v Scotland Betting Tips

Spain's dominance is built upon the backbone of a solid defensive unit.

Never ones to go about things the easy way Scotland head into their final Euro 2012 Group I qualifier with their fate in their own hands. All they need to do is beat Spain, in Spain, and they’ll be in the draw for the Euro 2012 play-offs.

In reality, Scottish hopes lie over 2,000 miles away in Kaunas where Lithuania host Czech Republic. If the Czechs cannot better Scotland’s result in Alicante then the Tartan Army will progress to the Euro 2012 play-offs.

Scotland will take heart from pushing Spain all the way in the reverse of this fixture at Hampden almost a year ago to the day. On that occasion it took a Fernando Llorente strike ten minutes from time to separate the teams in a five-goal thriller. However, despite injuries to some important Spanish players it’s impossible to see Scotland taking anything from this game.

Some bookmakers are offering odds of 12/1 on an away win; I don’t think anyone could argue if Craig Levein’s side were twice that price.

At odds of 1/6 in the Match Odds market there isn’t much to be gained from backing a Spain win, unless you’re planning on putting down some serious dough. There is, however, an opportunity to get some notable returns by backing Spain in another market related to the outcome of the game.

A lot is rightly made of Spain’s attacking flair. But, much in the same way as Barcelona, their dominance is built upon the backbone of a solid defensive unit. The work that they do off the ball in chasing down the opposition and winning the ball back contributes to their success every bit as much as their offensive prowess.

Combine that with Scotland’s distinct lack of creativity – against Liechtenstein on Saturday they created very few clear-cut goalscoring opportunities – and the 10/11 offered by Ladbrokes on Spain winning to nil looks particularly appealing. Especially considering 8/11 is the best that any other major bookie is willing to offer on this particular market.
