Stoke City v West Brom Betting Preview

Roy Hodgson will have been working hard in training on making his side difficult to beat, and expect to see a more rigid Albion side under the former Liverpool and Fulham manager

Monday night's match will see Stoke City take on West Bromwich Albion at the Britannia stadium in what is likely to be a battle from start to finish. West Brom are poised precariously above the relegation zone in 17th whilst Stoke occupy a respectable mid table position in 10th.

Tony Pulis's physical Stoke team lost 1-0 at The Emirates last Wednesday night and were out played for long spells in that match. West Brom salvaged a draw against Wolves last weekend scoring in injury time.

The home side have Matthew Etherington and Abdoulaye Faye rated as doubtful with Mamady Sidibe definitely missing .The visitors have concerns over Scott Carson, Marek Cech and Youssouf Mulumbu being available.

Rule Britannia

Stoke's traditionally strong home record is not all that good this season having drawn two and lost four of their thirteen home games. In the first meeting back in November Stoke trounced West Brom in an emphatic 3-0 victory.

West Brom have only picked up two wins and two draws on the road this season and need to improve on that if they are to survive the drop. City are the bookies favourites but West Brom should be more difficult to beat under Hodgson and have drawn three of their last four matches, therefore odds of 12/5 on a draw look like great value.

Vela to Baggie a Goal?

You might fancy West Brom's Mexican starlet Carlos Vela who grabbed that late equaliser in the Wolves game, he is a generous 8/1 to score first. Stoke don't score a lot of goals; their top league scorer is Robert Huth with just six. New signing John Carew has notched a couple of goals already for The Potters and is 9/2 with most bookies to open the scoring.

Given West Brom's poor defensive record away from home, evens on their being over 2.5 goals might seem a good price. One thing to consider is that Roy Hodgson will have been working hard in training on making his side difficult to beat, and expect to see a more rigid Albion side under the former Liverpool and Fulham manager. 4/5 on their being under 2.5 goals stands out as a good bet.

There's no doubt Hodgson would take a draw in this fixture given his side's terrible away record and it will be interesting to see if Pulis's misfiring strikers can get goals.

With the league being extremely tight this season, Stoke will be looking to put a healthy gap between themselves and the relegation zone in a league where just a couple of defeats can see you dragged into the mire.
