Stoke made betting favourites to sign Owen

Initial betting markets had a host of Championship clubs leading the way

Bookmaker Paddy Power have Stoke as their 2/1 betting favourites to sign striker Michael Owen after the former England striker’s contract at Old Trafford was not renewed.

Initial betting markets had a host of Championship clubs leading the way with West Ham, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Leicester all quoted at short prices. But when Owen told Sky Sports that he believed he could still cut it at the top level bookmakers were forced into a rethink.

“I don't think I have lost the ability to score goals or play at a high level,” said the 32-year-old.

“I certainly feel as if I can still play at the top level so we will wait to see where that is. If it's not in the Premier League it may be further afield.

“I don't think the Championship would be an option, to be totally honest.”

Everton are made the 11/2 second favourites with Paddy Power, while a move to the MLS is quoted at odds of 10/1. However, although the striker suggested a move ‘further afield’ could be on the cards, the US may be a stretch too far given his horse racing commitments in the UK.
