Stoke v Newcastle: Potters to edge tight game

Stoke have lost just one of their last 13 home league games

Newcastle United were knocked out of the Carling Cup in midweek but the Magpies visit the Britannia Stadium on Monday night hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season against Stoke City.

The Magpies have not beaten Stoke in four attempts since returning to the Premier League in 2009 but three points here would see them jump up to third in the table – just one point (and one position) behind reigning champions Manchester United. Despite Steven Taylor’s broken nose, Alan Pardew should be able to name an unchanged team from the one that beat Wigan in their previous league outing.

Stoke have lost just one of their last 13 home league games but come into this game on the back of a rare home defeat in midweek at the hands of Liverpool in the Carling Cup. Jonathan Woodgate returned to the starting line-up in that game and should be available to face his former club on Monday night. As usual, Tony Pulis will set up his team to be physical from the start and the main goal threat will come from set-pieces in the form of long throws and corner kicks; from which 71% of Stoke’s goals have been scored this season.  At 6’7”, Peter Crouch will provide a significant threat to Newcastle’s defence both from set-pieces and in normal play.

The Magpies have conceded just six goals in their opening nine matches and currently boast the best defensive record in the league. However, no team has conceded fewer at home than Stoke so don’t be tricked into expecting a treat this Halloween – a goal-fest seems unlikely. Crouch is 21/10 with Paddy Power to score at any time during the game but first goalscorer odds of 13/2 with 888sport may be worth a flutter.

Newcastle have surprised many with their impressive start to the season but, following a physically demanding game in midweek, avoiding defeat at the Britannia stadium may prove one step too far.

Recommended Bets:
