Sunderland made favourites to land Holt

Sunderland are understood to be in the market for a striker this summer

Sunderland have emerged as the betting favourites to sign striker Grant Holt this summer after the Norwich striker handed in a transfer request at Carrow Road last week.

The club rejected the 31-year-old’s request and both parties are said to be holding talks in the early part of this week according to agent Lee Payne.

“It's been a difficult few days really. It's not a decision Grant's made overnight. It's something that's been ongoing for a little while now,” Payne told the BBC.

“He loves the club. He loves the fans. I think the fans love him. He's had a tremendous three years and he just feels it was a decision he had no other choice to make at this stage.”

Sunderland are understood to be in the market for a striker this summer as Nicklas Bendtner returns to Arsenal after a season-long loan spell and Asamoah Gyan could make his move to Al Ain a permanent one, leaving the Black Cats with only Fraizer Campbell, Ji Dong-won and Connor Wickham as recognized strikers.

In the past Martin O’Neill has often built his teams around a big target-man striker and it appears that the press and bookmakers have jumped on this bandwagon to come up with odds of Evens on Holt moving to the Stadium of Light. Aston Villa are the 7/2 second favourites to sign the 17-goal forward, while Everton, Fulham and Newcastle are each at 10/1.
