Sunderland v Newcastle Betting Odds

the atmosphere and pressure that local derbies generate can be a great leveller and so there will be a few punters keen to take betting odds of 11/4 on a Newcastle victory.

Revenge is high on the agenda as Sunderland host local rivals Newcastle looking to avenge October's 5-1 hammering at St James' Park.

Although Sunderland could move into the top four, depending on other results, with a win here, the points on offer will be of very little significance to the sell-out crowd at the Stadium of Light.

The only thing that matters here is to restore (or re-embellish in the case of the Geordies) local pride. It is a sign of just how important this fixture is in the north east that despite both sides flying high in the Premier League the only result that gets mentioned in the area is that Halloween horror show from Steve Bruce's side.

The most frustrating thing about that result from a Sunderland fan's point of view is that it was hugely uncharacteristic of The Black Cats. It was one of only two occasions in their last 25 games that they have conceded more than two goals.

They have in fact kept 11 clean sheets in 22 Premier League games this season and whilst Darren Bent, Danny Welbeck and Asamoah Gyan get all the plaudits it is because of their defensive solidity that they are doing so well this season.

Welbeck and Lee Cattermole will both have late fitness tests ahead of the game whilst Nedum Onuoha's return is a timely boost for a threadbare Sunderland defence.

The game looks to have come too early for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll as he continues to recover from a thigh injury and Cheik Tiote begins a three-game-suspension. Shola Ameobi, Jonas Gutierrez and Jose Enrique all come back into the Magpies' squad.

Sunderland lost their unbeaten home record against Blackpool in their final game of 2010 but bounced back immediately with victory over Blackburn on New Years Day. They've picked up 22 points at the Stadium of Light this season and so it is no surprise that the bookmakers have made them the short 11/10 betting favourites.

But the atmosphere and pressure that local derbies generate can be a great leveller and so there will be a few punters keen to take betting odds of 11/4 on a Newcastle victory.

Kevin Nolan netted a hat-trick in that now-famous 5-1 win at St James' Park and in doing sealed his place in the hearts of Newcastle fans. He is 9/1 to get the opener this weekend, 3/1 to score at any time and 100/1 to score another hat-trick that would probably see the Geordies erect a statue of him on Tyneside.

Sunderland fans will be hoping that Bent can continue his mini resurgence of two goals in three games after a barren spell of five games without a goal. He is 9/2 to open the scoring and 11/8 to score at any time.

This promises to be a feisty affair with passions set to reach fever pitch. World Cup final referee Howard Webb is the man in the middle and I expect he'll be reaching for his cards on more than a few occasions. Sunderland's players know that they will need to show a high level of commitment if they are to restore pride and faith amongst their fans.
