Sunderland v Wigan: Score draw on the cards

Wigan have all sorts of problems

On Saturday, Sunderland host Wigan in a game that could be a war of attrition. Both teams are out of form, meaning that they will be looking for the magical three points to get back on track as they enter the hectic Christmas period.

For the home side, they are severely lacking up front since Asamoah Gyan left the club late on in the transfer market, leaving Steve Bruce with no time to find a suitable replacement. This has left them with no reliable source of goals, meaning that they have to overly rely on contributions from the midfield. To compensate for their anaemic attack, Sunderland possess one of the tightest defences in the top flight, conceding only 13 goals so far in 12 games, and because of this boast a positive goal difference belying their position in 15th.

Wigan, on the other hand, have all sorts of problems. They can’t seem to score more than one goal in a game, having the joint-lowest goal tally in the Premier League (10 along with Stoke). At the back, they have had problems closing a game out having held a lead last week at home to Blackburn, only to concede a penalty late in injury time.

On the face of it, 0-0 seems to be the obvious scoreline as Roberto Martinez may send his side out to come away from the Stadium of Light with a vital point on their travels. However, I think that there may be a goal or two in this game, especially given Wigan’s brittleness at the back. A Sunderland win looks the obvious punt, at 8/11 with Paddy Power, but I can see Wigan rescuing a point, so maybe a 1-1 could appeal at 13/2 with SportingBet.
