Swansea v Aston Villa: Swans search for home success

The cornerstone of Swansea's success in Wales has been a solid backline

The Swans have enjoyed a fairytale start to life in the Premier League, but they’ll need to reconfigure their impressive home form if they’re to avoid falling away in the latter part of the season as Blackpool and Burnley did before them.

Swansea suffered their first home defeat of the season when Manchester United came to town last weekend. But were far from disgraced as the champions stumbled to an uninspiring 1-0 win. They’ve an immediate opportunity to put things right as Aston Villa – winless on the road – visit the Liberty Stadium this Sunday.

Midfielder Joe Allen should return to Brendan Rodgers’ starting XI having been relegated to the bench because of a calf injury last weekend. Steven Caulker, Ferry Bode and Alan Tate remain sidelined.

Stiliyan Petrov is expected to be available despite a hamstring strain and Jermaine Jenas could make a belated first start for the club. Nathan Delfouneso, however, will not play having yet to recover from a hamstring injury picked up on England Under-21 duty.

The cornerstone of Swansea’s success in Wales has been a solid backline. Javier Hernandez’s goal last weekend was only the second that they have conceded at the Liberty Stadium, and the first to be scored by an opposition’s player.

Neither are Villa adventurous. In fact that is one of the main criticisms of manager Alex McLeish. They’ve scored just two Premier League goals on the road this season, despite possessing one of the more threatening strike forces in the league.

Under 2.5 goals is some of a no-brainer. And at odds of 5/6 with Ladbrokes it could well be worth a heavy investment.
