Timid affair expected at the Stadium of Light

neither side has been picking up many cards in their recent matches

A rejuvenated Sunderland host Arsenal this weekend at the Stadium of Light with their fortunes certainly on the up since new manager Martin O’Neil took over.

Sunderland have rapidly climbed up the table in recent weeks and find themselves in eighth spot. They are the number one form side in the league over the last six matches having won five of them and drawing the other. Arsenal, on the other hand, have been heading the other way and their win against Blackburn last weekend was their first in five matches. There is no doubt that Arsenal have the better quality of the two teams but given the recent form of Sunderland it would be a brave man to back against them. Plus they have been doing so well without a host of stars that you can only see them going from strength to strength.

Talking of those missing stars they are still without Nicklas Bendtner, Titus Bramble, Wes Brown, Lee Catermole, Matt Kilgallon and David Vaughan who will all miss this fixture. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger also has quite a few players missing in Abou Diaby, Carl Jenkinson, Andre Santos and Jack Wilshere who are all out injured and Gervinho is still away on international duty with the Ivory Coast.

Given the fact that Sunderland are doing so well as of late and also that Arsenal have not beaten them at the Stadium of Light in the last three years, you could be tempted to opt for a home win. However, Arsenal can turn it on at anytime just as they did last time out crushing Blackburn 7-1, so this really is a hard fixture to predict.

When we dig deeper into the stats of each side we have seen that neither side has been picking up many cards in their recent matches, which is where our selection will come from. Both sides are in the top ten of the Premier League fair play table and there is nothing to suggest that this fixture will not head the same way as the stats suggest. Since O’Neil took over at Sunderland he has installed real discipline in his players which is reflected in them only picking up five bookings in their last nine matches. If you disregard Arsenal’s battle with rivals Manchester United they have only picked up five bookings from five matches also.
