Tottenham v Liverpool Betting Preview

betting firms are pricing both the home and away win at 13/8

A top-four finish is the primary target for both Tottenham and Liverpool this coming season and a win this Sunday would provide a timely psychological boost for either club.

Spurs got their first points on the board with a win over Wolves last weekend but will not feel truly settled until they prove they can get results against those they consider their peers. Liverpool, on the other hand, have started the season strongly but suffered a big setback when failing to breakdown a stubborn Stoke defence last weekend.

William Gallas, Sandro, Steven Pienaar and Michael Dawson are all definitely out for the hosts while Rafael van der Vaart, Aaron Lennon and Vedran Corluka will undergo late fitness assessments.

Kenny Dalglish could include Steven Gerrard in his match-day squad but the midweek Carling Cup tie against Brighton is a more realistic target for the Liverpool captain. Glen Johsnon is out having aggravated a hamstring injury against Stoke but Martin Kelly is hopeful of being available.

The main selection dilemma for Dalglish will be whether to start Andy Carroll alongside Luis Suarez or stick with Dirk Kuyt. The changes weren’t effective at The Britannia so the expectation is that the former Newcastle striker will regain his position in the starting XI.

The £30 million man is priced at odds of 12/5, by Sky Bet, to get his first league goal of the season this weekend.

It’s obviously a tricky one to call for punters and bookmakers alike as most online betting firms are pricing both the home and away win at 13/8. In situations such as this the draw is often the most logical play and can be backed at 12/5 with Bet365.

A historic statistic worth considering is that in each of the last four Premier League matches between Tottenham and Liverpool a penalty has been awarded. Sky Bet offer odds of 5/2 that the trend continues with another penalty taken in this fixture.
