United backed into 11/5 for title

£5,000 worth of bets on Paul Scholes to score the first goal of the game

Ladbrokes have cut their odds on Manchester United retaining the Premier League title to 11/5 after a 3-0 win took Sir Alex Ferguson’s men level on points with Manchester City.

Roberto Mancini’s men, who don’t play until Monday, remain at odds of 8/15 but Tottenham drifted out to 8/1 (from 6/1) after dropping points at home to Wolves on Saturday.

“United took advantage as Spurs lost their nerve today and the odds suggest it's a two-horse race between the Manchester sides for the title this season,” said Ladbrokes spokesperson Jessica Bridge.

The popular bookmaker also reported taking £5,000 worth of bets on Paul Scholes to score the first goal of the game at odds of 10/1 on his second Old Trafford debut.

“We're sick to the back teeth of players we thought we'd seen the back of taking us for a ride,” added Bridge.

At the other end of the table Blackburn boosted their survival hopes with a 3-1 win over Fulham. Despite the three points Ladbrokes still make Steve Kean their 7/4 favourite to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job, closely followed by Bolton manager Owen Coyle at 3/1.
