United into 1/10 to retain title

a moment of brilliance from Antonio Valencia broke the deadlock

Manchester United are now as short as 1/10 with bookmaker Ladbrokes to retain the Premier League title after beating Blackburn 2-0 at Ewood Park on Monday night.

David de Gea kept United level in the first half with a string of crucial saves, and it looked as though Rovers would earn a vital point in their battle to avoid relegation as the game past the 80-minute mark. But a moment of brilliance from Antonio Valencia broke the deadlock before Ashley Young put the result beyond doubt and handed United a five-point lead at the top.

“It was a long night. We had to persevere and in the end we got our rewards for it,” said Sir Alex Ferguson.

“The goals came so late, which typifies the history of the club.”

The result meant that bookmakers pushed their odds on Manchester City winning the league out to 5/1, with William Hill now taking bets on the margin of Manchester United’s victory in the final Premier League standings.

Hills now make ‘7 points or more’ the Even money favourite, with ‘4-6 points’ available to back at 4/1 and 10/1 offered that the title is decided by goal difference.
