United made Carling Cup favourites

Ferguson made 11 changes to the side that beat Chelsea

Manchester United have been made the Carling Cup betting favourites following their conclusive 3-0 win over Leeds at Elland Road last night.

Michael Owen netted twice and Ryan Giggs rounded things off as two of Sir Alex Ferguson’s old guard guided the Premier League leaders safely through to the fourth round.

Ferguson made 11 changes to the side that beat Chelsea on Sunday but from the 15th minute, when Owen’s scuffed shot trickled inside the post, the result was never in doubt.

Zeki Fryers, Paul Pogba and Larnell Cole all made their first-team debuts and the manager was happy with their performances and the way that they coped with the occasion.

“They did well,” Ferguson told Sky Sports. “I thought young Fryers did very well and showed good composure. The atmosphere here, as you know, is hostile and he coped with it very well.

“Paul Pogba came on at half-time and had a good 45, young Larnell Cole came on at the end, which was very good for him. He’s a very young under-18s player, he’s the youngest of the players coming on so it was good for them to get a taste of the atmosphere and a taste of what the first team’s like.”

The result and performance saw United shortened to 4/1 in the Carling Cup outright betting. Manchester City and Chelsea, who both play their third round games this evening, are 9/2 and 11/2 respectively.
