United to cruise past Amsterdammers

The visitors will have no option other than to attack

Manchester United host Ajax at Old Trafford on Thursday night in the second leg of their last-32 tie in the Europa League.

United lead 2-0 from the first-leg and will expect to complete the job at the Theatre of Dreams in order to progress to the last-16.

The Red Devils play Norwich City on Sunday and therefore Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to select a number of fringe players for the visit of Ajax. The Europa League is United's only remaining hope of cup success but the chase for a 20th Premier League title continues to take priority. The likes of Javier Hernandez, Dimitar Berbatov, Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling will all be hoping to play a part. William Hill offer 5/1 for Berbatov to break the deadlock and 11/8 to score at any time during the game.

Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Antonio Valencia and Anders Lindegaard are all unavailable while Anderson and Michael Owen have returned to training but are unlikely to feature.

Ajax also have injury concerns of their own. Derk Boerrigter, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Gregory Van Der Wiel, Theo Janssen, Eyong Enoh and Nicolai Boilesen are all missing through injury.

The visitors will have no option other than to attack if they are to have any chance of overturning the two-goal deficit; United will look to exploit any defensive gaps that are left in the process. Bet365 offer a best-priced 8/11 for over 2.5 goals to be scored during the game.

Ajax currently lie in sixth place in the top flight of the Dutch League and, although a win is not necessary for United to progress, their quality should be too much for Frank de Boer's men. Even at 2/5, a fourth successive United win at Old Trafford is worth backing but better value is available in the half-time/full-time markets in which the home side can be taken at Even money to be leading both at the interval and at the final whistle. Ferguson would like to have the luxury of resting as many of his players as possible and, as far he is concerned, the sooner his side kill off the tie, the sooner they can be wrapped up in cotton wool in preparation for Norwich.
