Uruguayan set to join Liverpool

The Nacional defender impressed for Uruguay in their recent Copa America triumph

Uruguay defender Sebastian Coates is set to join Liverpool for a fee reported to be worth £7 million.

The Nacional defender impressed for Uruguay in their recent Copa America triumph and has also been tracked by Manchester City and Ukrainian club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk throughout the summer.

The 20-year-old, however, has revealed that he would prefer a move to Anfield suggesting that fellow countryman Luis Suarez would be pivotal in the decision.

“I'd prefer Liverpool to Manchester City, but would need to see both offers,” Coates told Uruguayan media outlet Ovacion.

“It's a club with great history and tradition in English football. Furthermore, Luis [Suarez] would be a great help to me.

“Suarez has spoken to Kenny Dalglish and the sporting directors about my signing.”

Nacional vice-president Hector Olmes is also confident that the deal will go through.

“The offer is very good,” disclosed Olmes. “Surely Coates will go to Liverpool.”

At 6ft 6inches tall Coates posses both height and the ability to play the ball out of defence. Although he would not automatically qualify for a work permit it is expected that he would be granted one on the basis that he is an “exceptional talent”.
