Van Persie future remains unclear

The Dutchman has 18 months to run on his current Arsenal contract

Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has added flames to the fire by admitting that he does not know if The Gunners will keep talismanic striker Robin van Persie past his current contract.

The Dutchman has 18 months to run on his current Arsenal contract and therefore could leave the club on a free in summer 2013; or be sold next summer if he decides not to extend his current deal.

“I don't know if they will keep him,” Fabregas said. “It is his decision. At his age, if he wants to move, it will be his last chance and it he wants to stay he will stay and retire at Arsenal. We will see what he decides but he's been very loyal to Arsenal for a few years. He is a key player, the fans love him. For me, he is the role model of Arsenal, the star player and they cannot afford to lose him.

“Could he come to Barcelona? He would fit in anywhere but I'm an Arsenal fan and I want him to stay at Arsenal.”

Van Persie, 28, has indicated that he does not wish to discuss any contract extension until the summer. Although Fabregas’s comments were far from damming of his former teammate's future, they did little to quash Arsenal fans’ fears that he may follow in the footsteps of the Spaniard.

A January move looks extremely unlikely at this point. However, bookmaker Sky Bet does have a January transfer window betting market open relating to the player. Manchester City are the inevitable 11/4 favourites, followed by FC Anzhi at odds of 16/1 and Manchester United at 18/1. A summer transfer betting market, however, could prove to be a lot more interesting.
