Wenger given vote of confidence

Wenger has come under increasing pressure from Gunners fans

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood is “happy” with Arsene Wenger despite The Gunners’ poor start to the new season.

Wenger has come under increasing pressure from Gunners fans following the sales of key players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri and subsequent high-profile defeats to Liverpool and Manchester United.

The Frenchman delved into the transfer market on deadline day to appease some of his critics, bringing in Per Mertesacker, Andre Santos, Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun, but the ultimate test will come when they return to Premier League action.

Bookmakers were forced to slash the odds on Wenger being the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season, but Hill-Wood has moved to quash any lingering doubts surrounding the manager’s immediate employment status.

“It's complete and utter rubbish and absolute nonsense. I think he is happy enough and we are happy enough,” said Hill-Wood.

“We have brought some new players in and although I don't know that much about many of them I think, generally speaking, they are going to improve the squad.”

Victor Chandler currently offer betting odds of 1/3 that Wenger is still in charge on the final day of this season and 2/1 that he isn’t.
