Wenger hints at Carling Cup changes

Wenger confessed that some of his players were tired

Arsene Wenger has admitted that he will make several changes to his starting line-up for the midweek Carling Cup clash with Manchester City.

The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw with Fulham at the weekend and Wenger confessed that some of his players were tired having played in the Champions League only a few days previously.

“Wednesday to Saturday afternoon is short, the shortest you can get – but it's not an excuse. It's an explanation,” said the Frenchman. “We want to be in the Champions League so you cannot cry when you are tired.”

The result extended Arsenal’s unbeaten run to 10 games in all competitions, but Wenger has acknowledged that he will be forced to make several changes to his starting XI for this Tuesday evening’s game.

“I will have to change the team because some players are on the fringe, muscular-wise,” added the Arsenal boss.

“We have a few players on the edge like van Persie, of course, and Walcott, who had a hamstring alert, and Ramsey. We'll see how we go.

“We have red alerts on a few players and I will pick as strong a team as I can.”

Arsenal are made the 2/1 outsiders by Victor Chandler to beat Manchester City inside the 90 minutes and are 11/10 to qualify for the semis.

The north Londoners are quoted at 7/1 to win the Carling Cup with Manchester United as 2/1 favourites, closely followed by Manchester City at 11/4.
