Wigan v Blackburn Betting Preview

Neither team has a huge amount of goals in them but Wigan cannot defend anywhere and Blackburn have a terrible defensive record away from home

Blackburn make the short journey to play rivals Wigan this weekend when there will be more than just three points at stake.

The last time theses two sides met a deserved 2-1 victory for Rovers moved them out of the bottom three and two points ahead of The Latics. Since then Rovers' relegation worries have eased and going into this one they sit ten places and eight points clear of their Lancashire rivals.

Despite breaking his cheekbone Gary Caldwell completed the ninety minutes in midweek but is still a major doubt for this one. Connor Sammon signed on deadline day from Kilmarnock and could make his debut.

Roque Santa Cruz will be out for a couple of weeks and Gael Givet will have a late fitness test but deadline day signings Ruben Rochina and Mauro Formica could make their debuts.

Wigan must find clinical touch

After a 2-2 midweek draw at West Brom, Roberto Martinez bemoaned his teams lack of a clinical touch in front of goal when attempting to kill teams off after going ahead. But in truth they were probably lucky to escape with a point with the woodwork and Ali Al Habsi saving them on numerous occasions.

Wigan have not won in their last six league games and the last time they tasted victory at the DW Stadium was on November 13.

They have the worst home record in the division, having only picked up a meagre two wins and 12 points out of a possible 39. Relegation awaits unless major improvements are made.

Despite a 1-0 defeat at home to Tottenham in midweek, boss Steve Kean had every right to be pleased with his team's performance and only an excellent performance from Heurelho Gomes stopped his side from claiming at least a point.

The jury is still out on boss Kean after Sam Allardyce's acrimonious departure. The Scot has only managed three wins in nine league games but they currently sit a comfortable 9th place, seven points clear of relegation.

However, they have lost five of their last six games away from Ewood Park

This one looks difficult to call and the bookmakers' betting odds reflect this with 6/4 on a home win, 9/4 on the draw an away win also at 6/4.

Was Sammon the Catch of Deadline Day?

Both of these clubs are startlingly short of a natural goalscorer and it was no surprise to see them both add fire power to their ranks on deadline day. The expensive flop of Mauro Boselli has left The Latics without any sort of focal point and it will be interesting to see if Connor Sammon can make the step up after scoring 17 goals in 25 appearances in the SPL this season.

Kean believes that new signing Rochina can make an immediate impression despite only scoring twice in thirteen appearances for Barcelona B this season. He will also be hoping that playmaker Formica can create a few more chances for his misfiring forward line.

Top goalscorer Hugo Rodallega has six so far and is dangerous if not a natural finisher, he can be backed at 6/1 to grab the first goal. Sammon is 7/1 in the same market.

Blackburn's top league goalscorers are Morten Gamst Pedersen and Niko Kalinic who both have four. They are 12/1 and 6/1 respectively to grab the first goal. New boy Rochina is 7/1 in the same market.

Wigan are the lowest scorers in the whole division scoring only a dismal 22 in their 25 Premier League matches so far.

Blackburn have scored a respectable 14 on the road but have also conceded an incredulous 27, the second highest in the division.

Neither team has a huge amount of goals in them but Wigan cannot defend anywhere and Blackburn have a terrible defensive record away from home so over 3.5 at 3/1 could be worth a punt.

Blackburn need to fix their away form if they are to maintain their comfortable league position and what a perfect place to start, at the team with the third worst home record in the country.
