Wigan v Blackburn: Relegation battlers to share spoils

recent results suggest there are plenty of goals in the game

After the fortnight international break, the Premier League is back with some more-than-intriguing contests. On Saturday afternoon, one of the weekend's biggest fixtures takes place at the DW stadium with Wigan Athletic taking on Blackburn Rovers. If ever there was one, this is a definite six-pointer.

Both teams are in desperate need of the three points, having only one win each so far this campaign. Wigan tasted victory the earlier of the two teams, when they beat QPR 2-0 in August. Since then, however, they have been in dreadful form, and are on a current run of eight defeats in a row. They will be hoping that the break will have given them time to recuperate and plan for this all-important Lancashire derby.

For Blackburn, they enjoyed their solitary success against Arsenal, who, at the time, were drastically out of form themselves. A 4-3 triumph temporarily saw the pressure ease on manager Steve Kean but since then have seen results include a 3-3 draw at Norwich, where they side gave away a 1-3 lead with very little time left in the 90.

Looking forwards to this contest, recent results suggest there are plenty of goals in the game, as the last four meetings at Wigan have seen 20 goals, including a memorable 4-3 last season and a 5-3 result in 2007, both in the home team's favour. With both teams desperate for the victory, it could either be a tentative game or indeed follow the recent pattern and become a goal-fest.

Given Hugo Rodallega has been non-entity so far this season, we should look at the away side for the first goal-scorer. The main target for Blackburn seems to be Yakubu since his summer move from Everton, and if you want to back him to strike first then he is available at 15/2. With Blackburn's recent knack of surrendering a lead, I see them going in front but for The Latics to fight back. A 2-2 draw could be the best for best value, available at 14/1 with many bookmakers.
