Wolves linked with McFadden

McFadden is believed to be nearing full fitness

Wolves could offer out-of-contract Scotland striker James McFadden a trial at Molineux following the 28-year-old’s release from his contract with Birmingham.

McFadden is believed to be nearing full fitness following surgery on a cruciate knee ligament injury in the Untied States this summer. But the St Andrew’s club opted not to take up the option of two-year contract extension.

Mick McCarthy tried to bolster his striking options on transfer deadline day when he attempted to sign Federico Macheda on loan from Manchester United. However, Sir Alex Ferguson wanted assurances that the young Italian would get regular first team football and McCarthy could not offer that.

“I would say we would be interested in speaking to any player who is out of contract who we think might be helpful to us,” said Chief executive Jez Moxley when speaking to the Express & Star.

McFadden scored 13 goals in 82 appearances for Birmingham since making a £4.75 million move from Everton in January 2008.
